About God’s Greyts Greyhound Group, Inc.
God’s Greyts Greyhound Group, Inc. is an IRS designated 501(c)3 non profit, family-friendly adoption group dedicated to the placement of retired racing greyhounds into loving, qualified and caring homes.
Once out of the race kennel, all of our Greyhounds are fostered in our homes before being available for adoption, so you are getting a dog that has already learned how to be a pet. We do not maintain a “kennel”. We spay and neuter our dogs right away as soon as they come into our group. We do not wait for an adopter to come along before we have them vetted.
Our group formed in July 2007. We placed 72 ex-racing greyhounds that year, in both local adoptions and with partnering adoption groups in other states. In 2008, 140 greyhounds found homes through our group. In 2009, 166 lucky puppers passed through our loving hands. 2010 saw 219 hounds out our doors. In 2011, 163 Greys went home. So far this year, we’ve already taken in 13 newbies. About 75% of the dogs coming into our group are transported out of state, with 25% being adopted locally. The reason for this is that are 13 active dog tracks in the state of Florida, but there are many, many greyhound adoption groups in states that do not have dog racing. There are far too many greyhounds in Florida for them all to be adopted locally, so part of our mission is getting them out of here and safely into groups elsewhere. We treasure our relationships with our northern adoption partners!
We could not do any of this without our awesome team of dedicated and caring volunteers! Many thanks to Chuck, Karen, Nancy, Brian, Arty, Reina, Tammy, Margie, Gary, Holly, Judi, Bill, Paige, Steve A., Mickey, Jackie, Matt, Michelle B., Kevin, Kristin, Charlene, Jenn, Steve R, Michelle C., Paul, Lori, Sherry, Joanne, Dan, Ruthie, Pete, Helen, Tamra, Melissa, Jay, Cindy, Art, Dot, Fred and our amazing webmaster, Steve P.
Our group is neither pro-racing, anti-racing, nor racing “neutral”. Our members all have different views on dog racing and we choose to put little importance on the pros or cons of racing. Rather, we are all “pro-dog” and work tirelessly to get greyhounds adopted.
We need foster homes! If you want to help and are ready for one of the most rewarding canine experiences you’ll ever have, we can bring you a greyhound that will suit your family. Our fostering period varies anywhere from just a few days to several weeks. If you fall in love with your foster Greyhound, you’ll have the first option to adopt him or her, unless we’ve previously made you aware that it has already been “spoken for” and is awaiting our next scheduled transport. We provide everything that you will need to foster a greyhound, free of charge! You’ll get a crate, crate blanket, dog food, martingale leash, tag collar with ID tag and all medications to maintain your foster dog. All you’ll need are bowls for food and water and lots of love!
